Edmund Chein, M.D., began his pioneering hormone replacement career while practicing Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in California. He specialized in treating patients whose endocrine functions had been damaged or destroyed as a result of injuries. While administering hormones to patients, to replace those that the damaged organ would normally produce, Dr. Chein noticed remarkable rebuilding effects in muscle, skin, bone mass, and other body systems.

Struck by the potential of these effects, Dr. Chein started searching scientific literature for studies to confirm hormone replacement's possible usefulness in middle-aged and older adults, who often have low circulating hormone levels.

Among many supporting studies, Dr. Chein found the work of Daniel Rudman, M.D. et al, Medical College of Wisconsin, who, in 1990, had published the landmark study "Effects of Human Growth Hormone on Body Composition in Elderly Men." Dr. Chein was exhilarated to find that these studies corroborated all his early clinical observations.

After further research and additional clinical experience, Dr. Chein developed a proprietary system for hormone replacement. In this system, for which a patent was granted by the U.S. Patent Office, human growth hormone is administered in a low-dose, high frequency method also developed by Dr. Chein, and balanced with a broad panel of other hormones, combined according to specific protocols.

Under the supervision of a fellow physician, Dr. Chein first tested the program on himself. The results were even more dramatic than he had expected. Within six months and without changing his lifestyle, his cholesterol and tryglyceride levels had normalized, he had lost weight, and the chest pain he had been experiencing disappeared.

Following an extensive legal and regulatory process, Dr. Chein became the first physician in the United States to offer a total hormone balancing therapy that included growth hormone.
